Have you ever opened the camera on your phone to take a selfie and thought “wow that cannot be me”? Good news! Most of us have done this and you are definitely not the only one. Often times, it can attributed to a bad angle but sometimes it is truly a double chin or stubborn fat staring back at us. Once again, you are not the only one! Under the chin is a pesky fat pocket area that can be difficult to get get rid of with diet and exercise alone.
Que Kybella!
Kybella is the synthetic form of the naturally occurring substance deoxycholic acid. This substance is typically used in our body for the breakdown of dietary fats. When treated with Kybella, deoxycholic acid is injected into the area under the chin to safely and effectively dissolve unwanted fat cells. Kybella is an FDA approved treatment used to improve the appearance of the side profile and is meant for patients with a moderate to severe double chin.
We asked our Instagram followers to submit questions they had about Kybella and here is what they asked.
Does it hurt?
Overall, the procedure itself is definitely tolerable. We provide ice beforehand, during, and after the treatment to help the patient feel as comfortable as possible. Most patients complain of a slight burning sensation from the Kybella solution itself and say it is worth it in the end.
How long does the appointment take?
This appointment usually takes about 30 minutes. Our providers will review your medical history as well as any questions you may have. We provide you with a full personalized consultation to go over pre-procedure instructions as well as post-procedure care.
How much does it cost?
At Skin Charm a Kybella treatment costs $1200 per session and includes multiple vials of the solution to ensure that the area is treated fully.
I heard you’re swollen after. Is that true?
You can expect to experience mild to moderate swelling after the procedure that can last up to 2 weeks. Therefore, we encourage patients to schedule this procedure well in advance of any major events or social engagements. While masks are still required in most places of business, it is a perfect time to get this procedure because it can be easily camouflaged with a face mask.
How many treatments will I need?
For most patients, we suggest multiple (2-4) sessions at least 6-8 weeks apart to achieve the most desirable results.
How long until I see the final results of my treatment?
The result of this treatment usually develops over the few months following the procedure. Swelling can be expected for at least a seven days post procedure but can vary from patient to patient. We prefer to see you back in the clinic for your next treatment in about 8 weeks to let things settle completely.
How does it work?
Kybella works by dissolving unwanted fat cells in the area that is treated. The dissolved fat cells are then filtered out through your lymphatic system and eliminated. It is important to follow a healthy diet, drink ample amounts of water, and get physical exercise to help speed up the process.
Can I get Kybella and PDO threads in the same appointment?
The is a very commonly asked question and the answer is unfortunately no if you are treating the same area. For example if you are treating jawline and neck, then you cannot be treated with Kybella in the same appointment. You can, however, treat a different area with threads in the same day! Also, these two treatments provide completely different results in the end. Kybella is used to dissolve stubborn fat cells whereas PDO threads are used to lift the skin and stimulate collagen formation. In an ideal world, we would like to see you in clinic for Kybella first and then 8-12 weeks later for PDO threads in that area.
I don’t really have a double chin but I want to know if I can still get Kybella?
Come in for a consultation! We can assess you to see if you a good candidate for Kybella. Usually, if you can pinch it, we can dissolve it.
Can I get Botox and Kybella in the same appointment?
Yes! You can be treated with Botox or Dysport in the same day. The only exception to this would be the neck area. We would not want to treat you with Botox in the same area as Kybella.
Can I get Filler and Kybella in the same appointment?
Yes as long as it is not in the same area. For example, we can treat your mid face area or lips with filler and under the chin area with Kybella. However, we cannot treat chin and jawline with filler while treating with Kybella.
Moral of the story.
At Skin Charm, we love Kybella because it often times helps to create a more defined jawline by getting rid of stubborn fat under the chin. This is especially important as mask mandates begin to lift, you don’t want to have extra fullness under the chin that was previously hidden with a mask. The results need time to settle so don’t get caught in a predicament when you no longer have a mask to hide things. With your new bestie, Kybella, you’ll be looking selfie ready in no time!
